June 2011 The walleye are in! Been catching on average 17 walleye per trip! Lake Erie has been pretty flat.
July 14th, 2010 We had one boat out of Conneaut for a morning perch trip. The perch fishing has been tough in the last few days. The schools have scattered and broke up somewhat, but they are starting to get back together. The schools should stabilize and the bite should heat up in the coming week. We ended up with about 100 perch in the 8-10 inch range. Not really big fish, but good eaters. The bite was really early.
July 11th, 2010 We again had both boats out of Conneaut today. We were fishing in 72-75 feet of water between Ashtabula and Conneaut. Both boats came in with 19 walleyes. We had to work at them as there wasn't a large school but rather small pods of fish scattered all over. Four walleyes were over 9 lbs with an average size of 6lbs+!
July 10th, 2010 We had both boats out of Conneaut. SCC 1 got 22 eyes and a steelhead, SCC 2 got 23 eyes and a steelhead. We were 7-8 miles off shore in 72-74 feet of water. The fish came from a variety of presentations. Two coolers of big fish!
Friday, May 28th, 2010 We went out on an exploratory mission. We started trolling in shallow water (16-26'). We marked some fish and caught one walleye, two bass, and a sheephead. The water was way too clear and completely calm (no good for walleye). The lines kept loading up with floating seaweed. We packet it up about 8:00am. The fish are there, better water will let us starting icing them. I heard reports of shallow fish west of Conneaut and along the Pa shoreline at night.
Wednesday, May 26th, 2010 We just put the boat back in Conneaut Harbor after a month in Olcott, New York. The salmon fishing was a lot of fun. We had the best weather we have had for 4 years up there. Some days were diamonds, some were mediocre. We averaged 7 fish per day and about a dozen hook-ups. Our biggest king was 26lb, 11 oz, 41 inches (another spring best for Something Catchy).
We launched the boat and went out and tried for some perch. We only fished about an hour and kept 20 perch. They are still spawning. The bite should pick up in the next week or so.
No more reports for 2009. We winterized the boats and put them to bed for the winter. Little did I know that November was going to be like May and the perch were going to light back up! Oh well, I'll just have to ration my winter fish supply. From the last report through today... We have been unable to get on the lake for several weeks now. Right after our last trip, we had 50mph winds and 14 foot waves! The lake was stirred up so badly that there was a mud line out 9 miles! It settled for a few days and we got slammed again with huge seas that stirred the silt up even worse. There has been almost no fishing going on since that first storm on September 28th. I pulles SCC 2 out of the water and winterized her, but SCC 1 is still ready for action if any presents itself. Sunday, 9/27
One boat went out of Conneaut for perch. 210 jumbos were on ice in 90 minutes! The perch fishing will be slammin' for another 3-4 weeks or so.
Wednesday, 9/23 We had 4 aboard for perch. The lake was really decent with 1-3' waves but the wind was ssw at 15-20. We set up in 56 fow and had 150 nice perch iced down in 1 hour and 45 minutes. I heard reports from some of the other Captains that the walleye fishing has slowed to a crawl. Saturday, 9/19 The day started out looking a little iffy with east wind and 2-3 foot waves. The forecast was for the waves to build even more but we seized the time we had and headed out. We set up on the Pa line and trolled west in 72 fow. Within 5 minutes a rigger went off and it was immediately obvious that a heavy fish was hooked up. Little did we ever imagine that it would be Something Catchy's heaviest walleye ever. After a 30 minute battle the monster slid into the net. When Matt (1st mate) dropped it onto the deck it sounded like a tuna. She was 33" long and weighed in on my digital scale at 15lb 2oz! What a fish! She had a 23" girth and was nearly 6" thick lying on the deck. Now the story gets better still. I exclaimed to the angler what a huge fish he had subdued and he didn't seem too enthusiastic about it. He said "yeah, that's a nice one... it is my first one." I asked if he was serious that it was his first walleye and he said; "no, I meant that it is the first fish that I ever caught. I have never even held a fishing rod before today." Of course I said "Oh, beginners luck...hahaha." He really didn't have any desire to get her mounted so I traded him some fish fillets for her. She will be heading to the taxidermist soon and will grace the walls of the Liar's Den in 2010. We ended up with 17 eyes, 2 of which were about 22" and 3-4 lbs, the rest were all over 6lbs! What a box of heavyweights! Tuesday, 9/15 We started out for eyes and got 10 big ones. The two biggest were 9.5 and 10lbs! Once the bite slowed and all we were pulling were sheephead we switched gears and went after perch. The crew hauled in 61 before the end of the day. Monday, 9/14 Our morning walleye clients out of Conneaut opted to catch perch before trolling. They caught 180 perch, then boated 7 eyes. All were nice fish, some of the biggest perch I have seen this year and all nice mature eyes. The bite has been early for both walleye and perch. Sunday, 9/13 We had morning perch and afternoon walleye trips. The morning perch trip went very well with a limit of 180 by 10:30. The lake was cooperative. The evening walleye trip boated 13 walleyes. We were plagued by sheephead all day. We caught 3-4 sheephead per walleye. Everyone had fun catching them. Saturday, 9/12 We had a 5 person perch charter in the morning along with a 4 man walleye trip scheduled. We got out to the perch grounds and started hitting them well when the lake got too rough for comfort. We ended up coming in at 9:30 with 23 perch and the second boat never left the dock. By 10:30am the waves were 4-7 feet. The boats that toughed it out did well but it was nasty out there. September 8th We had 5 people on board for walleyes and perch. We caught 21 eyes and they wanted to go after perch for the remaining couple hours of their trip. Good idea, we got 150 perch in an hour and 15 minutes. They ended up with nearly 60 lbs of fillets! September 7th One boat went out for eyes in the morning and caught a limit for the three clients (18). September 6th We had a morning walleye and am and pm perch trips. Our morning walleye trip got 18 eyes with one 8lb 15oz and one 9lb 6oz fish! Our morning perch trip got 120, the evening didn't fare so well with only 22 when the waves built out of the northeast and forced us off of the lake. September 5th We had a morning perch trip that ended with the demise of 180 perch. We also went out in the afternoon for eyes and caught 14. August 29th and 30th The lake wasn't having us this weekend. Waves went up and down from 2-4 feet to 6-8 feet all weekend. We had to reschedule our trips. August 28th An evening crew went out for perch and walleyes. They did about 60 perch and we began trolling. No sooner had we put the lines in the water and the fish were on them! It was frantic, ,but unfortunately the lake started getting rough. We managed 5 eyes and a steelie before we had to head back to shore as the waves had built to 5-7'. August 25th. Both boats were out of Conneaut. One went for perch and caught a 5 person limt of 150. The other went out for walleyes and caught 22 eyes and two steelhead. One stellie weighed over 14lbs! August 24th A crew went out of Conneaut for walleyes and hit them hard with 32 nice fish coming to the boat. August 23rd We took a morning crew for perch and boxed them out with 180. The perch fishing is still hot. August 22nd We had a morning walleye trip today. Lake started out nice, but ended up rough but the fishing was smokin! We boxed 27 walleyes by 1:00pm. August 17th and 18th One boat fished for perch both mornings and limited out in short order. The perch fishing is incredible! Sunday, August 16th One boat fished morning for eyes and did 14, then went on an evening perch trip and did 120. The other had an evening walleye trip and did 13. Saturday, August 15th One boat went out in the morning with 2 clients on board. They had their limit of 12 eyes by 11:30 and also put a small steelie in the box. The evening perch trip yielded a limit of perch for 3 people. All were nice fish in the 10-13" range. Thursday, August 13th Another cooler full, 120 perch and 8 eyes. Wednesday, August 12th Our morning trip went out for perch first thing and got 120 in short order. They then went out for walleyes and put 12 on top of the perch. What a cooler full! Tuesday, August 11th One boat was out today for walleyes and got 22 nice fish. The fish were right outside the perch schools in 64-69 fow. They hit a variety of spoon/diver combos, riggers, and stick baits. Sunday, August 9th We had to cancel today due to rough conditions. Saturday, August 8th
Conneaut is still the place to be. We had 4 clients and did the same progars as Thursday but the bite was a little slower. We caught 17walleyes and a steelhead. We did drop several fish which would have made our limit, but you can't catchy them all right? Lake was a bit choppy with a 10-20knot SSW wind which pushed up 2-3 footers out 7 miles. It rained later, and the lake got calmer. Overall: great day! We had one eye 9lb 12oz and several over 6 lbs. The cooler weighed in at 102 lbs!
Thursday, August 6th We fished for eyes out Conneaut today and really hit them hard. We put 23 fish in the box by 1:00pm and they were really nice fish! Averaging 5-6 lbs, that cooler was a real pain to get off of the boat. Conneaut should install a lift at the dock! The eyes are IN, finally! The school runs from Ashtabula all the way to just west of Conneaut. Nice fish, good numbers, and they are hungry.
Been away from the computer for a while We have been fishing regularly out of Conneaut. The walleyes haven't moved into Pa and are just beginning to show up in Conneaut in numbers. The perch fishing has been nothing short of incredible with limits of fish averaging 1/2 lb each! We have been taking our walleye clients out for perch first to make sure they have some table fare, then hitting the walleyes. We have averaged 9-10 walleyes per trip along with the perch and that makes for an impressive cooler of fillets.
Saturday, July 25th We had both boats out of Conneaut today for perch and walleye. SCC 1 had a difficult day and ended up with a handful of perch and one walleye. It got really rough and made fishing hard work. I was out on SCC2 and did well. We had 180 perch and 4 walleyes. Everyone had a great time, even with the rough conditions, rain, wind, and scattered storms. We were lucky to be able to get the day in. There were thnderstorms predicted to hit the area at about 11:00am but the broke up and dissipated about Geneva leaving us with just wind, waves, and a few showers. Reports indicate a large school of walleyes off of Ashtabula in 72-74'. Many boats caught their limit of eyes. We will be hitting these schools next time out.
Sunday, July 19th I had 4 anglers on SCC 2 out of Conneaut. It was a walleye trip, but I asked the clients if they would like to go out to the perch grounds first to ensure they had a good cooler for a fish fry. They opted to do just that. We limited out in under two hours, then set our sights on eyes. We caught 16 eyes most of which were in the 3-4 lb range. The Lake cooperated a lot better with 2-3' waves. Everyone was thrilled to have such a nice box full of fish.
Saturday, July 18th We had both boats out of Conneaut today. I took 5 people out on Something Catchy 2 for perch and we had our limit by 10:00am. Captain Mike had 4 people on SCC 1 for walleyes. Although they worked hard all day, they were only able to put two walleyes in the box. They lost a couple more in the prop wash, landed some smallmouth and sheephead. It was a tough day. West winds howled at 15-20 mph and the waves built to 4-6'.
Friday, July 17th Evening trip today with 5 guys out of Conneaut. We left the dock at 2:30pm and hit the perch first, we had a limit in an hour and a half. We had a couple of fellas not feeling so well and since we were fishing close to the harbor, I dropped them off and went back out for a last minute try for some eyes. We ended up with 5 walleyes on top of the perch.
Thursday, July 16th, 2009We haven't fished since Monday but the reports are that there is a nice school of eyes in front of Conneaut in 62-69' (right outside the perch pack). I talked to two Captains who did well. One had 19 and the other had 21 eyes. Perch are still hitting like crazy! Nicest fish I have ever seen! Monday, July 13th, 2009
I took SCC 2 out for perch today with 6 people on board. We landed on a nice school right away and boxed them out with 180 fish in just under two hours. I hear tell that the eyes are still west of us but are headed this way.
Sunday, July 12th, 2009 We had both boats out in the morning for walleyes out of Conneaut. It was a beautiful day, but the eyes weren't very cooperative. We caught several 4-5 lb smallmouth bass, dozens of sheephead, and managed only one walleye on each boat before we gave out clients the option of switching over to perch fishing. I anchored up with SCC 2 in 55' of water over a nice school and was quickly into jumbos. SCC 1 ran in for minnows and came back out just as we were running out of bait. They resupplied us and tied off to our stern. In less than an hour we had 330 beautiful perch in the coolers and headed for the dock.
